Thomas Aquinas (b. 1225, d. 1274)

Aurea Divi Thome aquinatis ordinis predicatorum doctoris Angelici, Summa contra gentiles. Lyon 1521. 8vo. [8]+314 leaves. Sheet v folded incorrectly, v 1,4,3,2,7,6,5,8. Titling in ink on fore-edge of text block. Woodcut initials, printer's device on last leaf. Title-page printed in red and black, with elaborate woodcut frame and a central vignette showing Aquinas. Foot of title-page with 16th century ink inscription “Ad usum fr(atr)is Jacobi van Heedae Ordinis Praedicatorum”, indicating the book was for the use of Brother Jacob van Heeda, who like Aquinas, was a Dominican. Front endpaper and fore margin of title-page with later ownership inscription of the convent of the dominicans at Bornheim (near Bonn). A few early marginal notations, pointers, and instances of faint underlining. One tiny wormhole affecting the text but stopping at fol. 23, title-page a bit thumbed and frayed, faint dampstaining in lower margin at front and rear, leaf o 7 torn at fore margin just into the text (no loss), generally fresh and clean internally. Bound in cont. blind panelled calf binding with, on both covers, fine impressions of the “acorn cresting” panel stamp of Jehan Norvis, Paris, (binder's name in small oblong space on the spine side of the panel), showing almost no signs of wear. Neatly rebacked and with corners restored, paper pastedowns revealing early vellum manuscript fragments used as board liners. Housed in box.

Literature: Fogelmark: Flemish and Related Panel-Stamped Bindings, p. 243.

Provenance: Bookplate of Wilhelmina Bossana loosely laid in at front, from the book collection of Staffan Fogelmark, later Flemming Erik Pedersen (1931–2020).
