U.S. Navy photographer: An original b/w press photograph of an American Grumman Hellcat fighter plane. Back with describing text dated September 9, 1943. Furthermore stamped newspaper publication date (June 14, 1944). Photo size 18×22 cm. Frame size 33×43 cm.
“Butch, what kind of plane to you need to beat the Japs?” This was the laconic question from US President Franlin D. Roosevelt to the pilot Edward “Butch” O'Hare when he received the Congressional Medal of Honor on April 21, 1942. The pilot's reply to the President sounded: “Something that will go upstairs faster”. The result can be seen in the present photograph: The Grumman Hellcat F6F. This plane distinguished itself with a superior manoeuvring ability - “Sweet to handle”, the pilots said - and a maximum speed of 610 km/h, making it one of the fastest fighter machines during World War II. The plane, intended for aircraft carriers, was developed for the struggle in the Pacific, yet later it was also deployed in other regions.
This is an original b/w press photograph from 1943, which shows normal signs of age and handling.
