Lomonosov Porcelain Factory, 1950s

A Russian porcelain figure, depicting the Russian ballet dancer Sergei Gavrilovich Koren (1907–1969) in the role of Mercutio in Sergei Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet from 1940, standing with hat, cape and short suit in purple, black and gold on white ground, holding a metal sword, at the feet his carnival mask. Designed 1948 by the Soviet sculptor and painter, Vera Ignatyevna Mukhina (1889–1953). Lomonosov Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, 1950s. H. 41.5 cm.

Provenance: Acquired by Viggo Oliver Elmetofte (b. Copenhagen 1903, d. s.p. 1988) in Moscow 1979, where he was on visit because of his great interest in opera and ballet. Thence by descent to his grandchild with residence in Denmark, until today.
