Bernstoff Castle is located north of Copenhagen and was built in the years 1759–1765 for Foreign Minister J.H.E. Bernstorff. The castle remained in the possession of the Bernstorff family until the beginning of the 19th century. It was later purchased by the Danish king Christian VIII (1786–1848).

In 1854, the castle was made available to the then Crown Prince the later Christian IX (1818–1906). During his long reign (1863–1906), the castle had its last great period of glory.

The royal family used the place as a summer residence and gathered here for half a century many of Europe's royal and princely houses. Edward VII of England, the Russian Tsar, Emperor Wilhelm I and II of Germany, and George I of Greece visited Bernstorff Castle.
