Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (b. Copenhagen 1911, d. Paris 1984)
Purchased by “Holstebro Kunstmuseum” in September 2020.
Forest scene, 1930s. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 65×50 cm.
Provenance: The artist's family.
Sonja Ferlov Mancoba's sculptures are known to most art lovers – not least after the beautiful retrospective exhibition of her work at the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen and Centre Pompidou in Paris last year. However, she actually began her artistic career as a painter, and at this autumn's auction, we can present one of her extremely rare oil paintings. Here it can clearly be seen how she developed her idiom rooted in Surrealism in the early 1930s – a style that was later refined in her sculptural artwork.
