From Christian Winther, “Hjortens Flugt” (The Stag's Escape), 1855, the chapter “Korset” (the Cross). Here Christian Winther describes the meeting between the young couple Ellen and Strange and the stag with a cross in a chain around the neck.

Med Øine sky han maalte De gamle Venner tyst; I Solens Glands da straalte Guldkorset paa hans Bryst; Han rakte frem sin Mule, Med Løbet sparked han; Da klang den gyldne, gule Kjede udi hans Man.
