Bodil Rohweder (later married Strubberg) received her artistic education at the School for Drawing and Applied Art for Women (Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder) in 1898 and at the Academy of Fine Arts' School of Art for Women (Kunstakademiets Kunstskole for Kvinder), where she was admitted in 1902 and was a student, with short interruptions, until 1910, when she graduated.
At the Academy of Fine Arts' School of Art for Women, Rohweder worked with nude studies as in the present work wich she presumably painted at the beginning of her of her study time atleast before 1906. Until then, it was mandatory for the male models at the School of Art for Women to wear a loincloth. Male nudity was a piquant and controversial topic in connection with the education of female artists. Although the School of Art for Women merged with the Academy of Fine Arts in 1908, giving women access to the academy on equal terms with men, the teaching in nude studies took place separately between the sexes until 1924, because one feared morality problems by letting women take part in the teaching.
Rohweder is known for her many zoological and botanical illustrations for scientific treatises – these illustrations were made with great accuracy and precision. However she also painted several portraits, nudes, and a number of still lifes and landscapes.
A few retouches and at edges minor crackles and minimal peelings.
