The 'Moscow Trials' is the name given to the public show trials that were held against a number of prominent Soviet citizens in the years 1936–38. The trials were generally based on false accusations and confessions were frequently extracted under torture. The trials were part of the great purges Stalin launched in the second half of the 1930s to consolidate his dictatorship. Trotsky heavily criticized the processes, which probably contributed to the decision to get rid of him.
