Wilhelm Marstrand (b. Copenhagen 1810, d. s.p. 1873)

The subject matter was very popular and Marstrand made several versions and studies of it, just as Peter Henrik Gemzøe made a lithography after Marstrand's painting. The final version of “Barselstuen” is at The National Gallery of Denmark (inv. no. KMS506).

Provenance: The collection of alderman Jacob Marstrand (1848–1935). He was the eldest son of the painter's youngest brother, Theodor. Hans Tobiesen's collections, his auction, Winkel & Magnussen 382, 1953 no. 636, reproduced p. 141.

Condition

A few minimal retouches. A single minimal crackle and a repaired tear ca 0,5 cm at lower edge.
