Gudrun Knud Larsen (b. Copenhagen 1895, d. s.p. 1972)
Iris, fuchsia and peonies in a white vase. Signed and dated Gudrun L. 1927. Watercolour on paper. Visible size 50×44 cm.
Gudrun Knud Larsen belonged to a family of artists, her maternal uncle, her father Knud Erik Larsen (1865–1922) and her sister Gerda Holm (1894–1981) were painters. Gudrun Knud Larsen attended the School of Arts and Crafts from 1913 to 1915 and was subsequently a student of Sigurd Wandel (1875–1947) until 1916. She specialised early on as a flower painter and made her debut with her watercolours at Charlottenborg's Spring Exhibition in 1922, where she exhibited almost every year until her death. She also exhibited at Liljevalchs in Stockholm in 1918, at Kvindelige Kunstneres Retrospektive Udstilling (The Women Artists' Retrospective Exhibition) in 1920, at Kvindelige Kunstneres Samfund (The Society of Women Artists) in 1930 and several other places including a solo exhibition in 1944. She travelled in Europe - in Germany, Yugoslavia and Paris and in 1927 she received the Carlson Prize.
Larsen's motives are often arrangements - bouquets of wildflowers or a flowering branch, rendered quite detailed and lifelike against a neutral background. She also painted dead birds in the same naturalistic manner and, especially in the 1940s, worked with frequent studies of mushrooms. In this auction we offer two works by Larsen - both delicate and detailed renderings of large bouquets in white vases, very typical of her work.
Some foxing. Examined in frame.
