Morgan & Sanders

A large Regency mahogany extending dining table with two rounded ends each housing the telescopic action that allows the table to be used at varying lengths, three extra leaves and eight brass clips, the table supported on six turned tapering and reeded legs with brass caps and castors, each end with large brass handle ingraved 'Patent Morgan & Sanders Inventors & Manufacturers 16 & 17 Catherine Street Strand London'. England, c. 1810–1820. H. 73 cm. L. 188 cm. W. 151 cm. L. in total 406 cm. (4)

Provenance: The table is bought at Apter-Fredericks, London.

The firm of Morgan & Sanders was established in 1800 by Thomas Morgan & Joseph Sanders who had both worked for the cabinetmaker Thomas Butler at 13–14 Catherine Street London. They formed their firm in competition to Butler next door at 16 and 17 Catherine Street. Sanders died in 1818 and the firm closed in 1820. A feature of some of their dining tables is the distinctive engraved handle listing the company name and address.
