Paul Fischer (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. Gentofte 1934)
“Ved stranden i Hellerup”. At the beach in Hellerup. Miss Elisabeth Fischer in a pink airy dress and Miss Anna Pauline Bruun in a white airy dress a summer day on the beach in Hellerup. Signed and dated Paul Fischer 1894. Oil on canvas. 58×74 cm.
Provenance: Acquired directly from the painter by the present owner's great-grandfather in the early 1900s. The painting has thus been owned by the same family for 3 generations for over 100 years and has never been offered for sale or exhibited.
The motif with beautiful women in long robes walking on the beach was very popular at that time.
Two other noticeable Danish paintings from the same period with the same motif must be mentioned:
P.S. Krøyer: “Sommeraften på Skagen Sønderstrand”. Summer evening on Skagen Sønderstrand. 1893. 100×150 cm. Sold Bruun Rasmussen auction 381, 1978 no. 62. Now at the Art Museums of Skagen (inv. 1288). Donated in 1978 by the German publisher Axel Springer.
Michael Ancher: "Søstrene Holst på Skagen Sønderstrand. The Holst sisters on Skagen Sønderstrand (81×163). (Anna Holst is dressed in the fashionable light pink dress). Dated 1896. Sold Bruun Rasmussen auction 690, 2001 no. 1019 for 6.000.000 DKK. Danish private collection.
If you look to the outside world, you cannot ignore the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923), whom P. S. Krøyer has often been compared to. “Promenade on the beach”, which Sorolla painted in 1909, captures the same timeless light summer atmosphere as in Paul Fischer's painting. Owned by Museo Sorolla Studio based in the painter's former home in Madrid.
