Here, Helle Brendstrup observes the following about the work (in Danish): “Hugo Larsen found many of his motifs at the harbour on St. Thomas. In this fine painting, he has painted fishermen in the moonlit night in the process of arranging their gear. In the background, a distinctive white building can be seen, behind which a pennant can be seen as a red accent, and in the distance other buildings fade along the harbor pier - the roofs glow greenish white in the night. The entire scenario is bathed in moonlight and the silvery glow evokes an almost mythical atmosphere. The painting is one of the best and most purely Impressionistic paintings Hugo Larsen has painted. Because he is primarily concerned with the light and its effect on the surroundings. Demarcating contours that illustrate shapes are partially omitted in favour of single brushstrokes, saturated colour splashes that depict, for example, the men's white shirts”.
