Ludvig Holberg (b. Bergen 1684, d. 1754)

Democritus og Heraclitus. Satyra (1). [Cph] 1721. Small 8vo. Unpag. Complete with 15 leaves. Bound in later, elegantly decorated fine full morocco (Jacob Baden).

One of Holberg's rarest books. Paul Johansen writes that after the publication of the 3rd Edition of Peder Paars, Holberg wanted to see how the audience would react to some of his other, shorter poems that he had hidden away in the drawer. However, only a limited edition was printed and no author name was found on the titel page. It was probably the intention to publish more poems, including “Apologie for Sangeren Tigellius”. Such a print has never emerged and nor is there any reference to it in the literature.

Literature: Paul Johansen: En samling Holberg Bøger. 1984, p. 24; E-M, I, 78.

Provenance: Flemming Erik Pedersen (1931–2020).
