Correction to the catalogue text, November 30 2021:

The title of the painting has been changed from “Brudeløbet / La petite mariée” (The Bridal Recessional) to “Provinsbryllup / La petite mariée” (Provincial Wedding).

“Brudeløbet” is the title of an almost identical painting from 1925, which Gerda Wegener received an award for in 1925 at the famous “Exposition des arts decoratifs” in Paris. There are only small differences compared to the work offered here, such as the groom's gaiters. “Brudeløbet” was sold in France and contemporary written sources state that it was hung in an office des mariages (office of marriages) in France. It is no longer possible to locate this painting. The work on offer here was exhibited in Ole Haslund’s House in Copenhagen in 1931 – Gerda & Einar Wegener’s last common exhibition - with the title “Provinsbryllup” (Provincial Wedding). The artist has probably repeated the motif for a sale in Denmark due to its success in France. The ”Provinsbryllup” offered here hung for many years in the wedding hall of the Langelinie Pavilion in Copenhagen. It was later moved to Store Kro in Fredensborg, after which it was incorporated into Margit and Erik Brandt's collection.
