Anna Klindt Sørensen (b. Stengård near Ry 1899, d. Ry 1985)

Female model. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 85×110 cm.

In 1918, Anna Klindt Sørensen first trained at Albertine Wesenberg's School for Porcelain Painters in Copenhagen. She was subsequently admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, but chose to leave the school in protest against gender discrimination. Klindt Sørensen is then a very active voice in the debate about women's issues and women's rights

In 1922 she traveled to progressive Paris, where she stayed for the next 16 years and received education at various painting schools under the artists Fernand Léger, Marcel Gromaire and André Lhote. She returned to Denmark in 1938, but continued to make many trips abroad in Scandinavia, Europe and Africa.

Her many travels inspire her to develop the distinctive expressive, caricatured and vibrating expression that characterizes her motifs. Her model images do not seek neatness and beautification, but exude in their toned-down colour and curled uneasiness of poetry, melancholy and intimacy.

Anna Klindt Sørensen receives the Eckersberg medal in 1963, the Thorvaldsen medal in 1976, as well as a large number of scholarships, and in 1980 she becomes an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts.
