A Russian holy pentecost icon depictiong Mother Mary is enthroned as the God bearer surrounded by apostles that are seated in a traditional arrangement with Blessed Prince Alexander of Nevsky († 1724), Venerable Pelagia the Penitent († 457), Venerable Theodore (Feodor) and Venerable Mary of Constantinople (Mary, 5th-6th C). Pentecost (in Greek, pentekoste) means the “fiftieth day”. It is on this day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles in the form of tongues of fire, fifty days after the resurrection of Christ, which is represented in this icon. While the apostles, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and many others, were all assembled in one place, a rush of wind came into the house and the Holy Spirit filled each of them. Tempera on wooden panel. 18th century. 42×30.
