‘It wasn’t long before I was one of the highest-paid slaves around. I was making a thousand a week—but I had about as much freedom as a field hand in Virginia a hundred years before’. Billie Holiday.
Billie Holiday died on July 17, 1959 at the Metropolitan Hospital Center in Harlem, New York and it is likely that the present photograph - dated July 18 - has been used in one of the subsequent obituaries.
This is an original b/w press photograph from 1959 (initially published 1947), which shows two creased corners, scratch (lower part), stains and minor area with pink discolouration in the left side of the photograph. Furthermore general signs of handling. Back with two stains and areas with slight discolouration.
