William P. Gottlieb (b. Brooklyn, New York City 1917, d. New York 2006, photographer, writer)

An original b/w press photograph of the American jazz singer Billie Holiday (1915–1959) during a performance at ‘Club Downbeat’ in New York on February 1, 1947. Back with agency stamp (United Press International Photo) and stamped publication date (July 18, 1959). Double glazing. Visible size 19.5×15.5 cm. Frame size 27×23.

‘It wasn’t long before I was one of the highest-paid slaves around. I was making a thousand a week—but I had about as much freedom as a field hand in Virginia a hundred years before’. Billie Holiday.

Billie Holiday died on July 17, 1959 at the Metropolitan Hospital Center in Harlem, New York and it is likely that the present photograph - dated July 18 - has been used in one of the subsequent obituaries.
