Sigurd Olrik was educated at Sophus and Gustav Vermehren's art school in 1894–1900 and 1900–1901 at Zahrtmann's art school. He was inspired by Joakim Skovgaard's religious art and worked early with Christian motifs, but his great interest was the Nordic legends, medieval history and folk songs. He illustrated i.a. Ingemann's historical novels. The present painting is a fine example of his skill.
The Roskilde Bishop Vilhelm denies his good friend King Svend access to the church and forces him to a large atonement because King Svend had had some men killed in the church.
