Constantin Hansen writes to his sister Alvilde 1th of June 1835: “Dernæst har jeg arrangeret og optegnet Martin Hammerichs Portrait”. I have arranged and made a sketch of the portrait of Martin Hammerich. And again 18th-20th of June 1835: Forresten har ieg meget travlt da ieg maa male lige til det sidste for at blive færdig med Hammerichs Portrait". I'm so busy that I have to work to the last minute to finish the portrait of Martin Hammerich.

This portrait bears witness of the influence of his friend, painter Christen Købke.

Provenance: Anna Mathea Hammerich, widow married to the portrayed, Iselingen (1901).

Martin Hammerich was an intellectual. His interest was in philosophy and mythology. He was one of the founding members of the liberal student society. He was rector of the school of civic virtue (Borgerdydskolen) in Copenhagen for more than 42 years. Martin Hammerich was a pioneer in reforming the Danish school system.
