Ludovica Thornam (b. Horsens 1853, d. Copenhagen 1896)

Portrait of Niels Ravnkilde (1823–1890). Signed and dated L. Thornam Roma 1888. Drawing ink and wash on paper. Sheet size 38.5×31 cm. Unframed.

Provenance: Circolo Scandinavo / Skandinavisk Forening i Rom (Inv. No. A36).

As chairman for several years of Skandinavisk Forening, the composer Niels Ravnkilde came into personal contact with most Danish artists in Rome. It is likely here that he met the Danish artist Ludovica Thornam, who was in Italy with her sister, who was also a painter, Emmy Thornam (1852–1930), from 1887 to 1888. Although Ravnkilde did not have his everyday life in Skandinavisk Forening, he always participated in the weekend festivities, often with musical performances. In the present portrait of Ravnkilde by Ludovica Thornam, she has captured Ravnkilde's calm but smiling in front of the piano.

Niels Ravnkilde's portrait is depicted by several artists in Skandinavisk Forening's collection – see, for example, the painter Frederik Christian Lund's portrait of him with lot no. 2425/7523.
