Viggo Johansen was in his early years as a painter inspired by old Dutch paintings and still life scenes. After he had visited Skagen in 1875 and in 1880 married Anna Ancher's cousin Martha and started a family, his favourite motif became interiors with his family. The palette is often lyrical with soft colours and a few lighting effects, as in this painting, where his wife Martha tells stories for three of the family's six children in front of the open fire from the stove.
