Unknown photographer: An original black-and white press photograph of Sir Winston Churchill (1874–1965) on the back seat of his car in the company of his wife, Clementine (1885–1977). On the back date of publication and a related press cutting dated March 27, 1964. From this it is evident that the couple are on their way from London to the family's country retreat, the manor house Chartwell in Kent. One of the last photographs of 'the Last Lion'. Photo size 19.5×20 cm. Frame size 33×43 cm.

This would be Churchill's last spring and summer at Chartwell, which he had purchased back in 1922 for 5,000 pound sterling. The place - and the consequent lifestyle - put the family's finances under a significant pressure from the very start, something that did not mitigate before World War II, when a group of wealthy friends and supporters undertook the burden of expense. Thereby the owner of the house could concentrate about winning the war!

Condition

This is an original black-and-white photograph from 1964, which shows normal signs of age and handling. Presumably torn off in the left side (not visible when framed). Back slightly yellowed.
