The medal was struck to celebrate the declaration given by he the Congress of Tucumán giving independence to the United Provinces of South America (modern-day Argentina, Uruguay, part of Bolivia) on July 9, 1816, from the Spanish Empire.

Provenance: Karl Marius Widding (1879–1947) who acted as Denmark's consul general to Argentina during the first world war, 1914–1918.
