Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855), the “father of existentialism”, entered Copenhagen University in 1830 as a theology student but extended his studies to philosophy and literature. In 1840 he graduated with a dissertation on irony, “Om Begrebet Ironi” (1841).

Søren Kierkegaard's important and influential doctoral thesis was only printed in 550 copies.
