Edward Hald (b. 1883, d. 1980)
“Graal”. Unique greenish grey glass vase. Inlaid with abstract pattern in brown and violet glass. Signed Hald, S. Graal, Orrefors 19. KB, HW. No. 830. Blown by Knut Bergqvist, etched by Heinrich Wollmann. Designed 1919. Made 1919 by Orrefors, Sweden. H. 21 cm.
The “Graal” technique was one of Orrefors' largest contributions to art glass in the 20th century. The technique, which basically consists of re-heating overlay glass in the style of Gallé and covering it with a thin layer of clear glass, created works which back then had a very special and modern expression, and was Orrefors' first and independent contribution to innovation. This present vase was designed by the artist Edward Hald, who joined Orrefors in 1917 as their second artist, and was to act as the more modern and abstract counterpart to the more neo-classical artist Simon Gate.
