I. P. Møller (after Jens Juel), early-19th century

I. P. Møller (b. Faaborg 1783, d. Copenhagen 1854), after Jens Juel:

Portrait of Queen Marie of Denmark, née Princess of Hesse-Kassel (1767–1852), dressen in a white dress, red shawl and with pearls in her dark, curly hair. Signed on the reverse of the canvas in Danish: After Juel's original, copy by I. P. Møller Copenhagen July 1804". Oil on canvas. Oval in four-sided frame. 68×51 cm.

I. P. Møller has written a dedication on the reserve, in a mixed Danish-German language, here translated to English: “of the same giving this piece, you good grandmother, for the proof of his love and graditude. I. P. M. [... indistinct, but presumably ”to the Landgravin of Hesse-Kassel"].

The original portrait, though here with bluw shawl, dated c. 1800: Ellen Poulsen, A Raisonné of the Works of Jens Juel no. 782, mentioned volume 1, p. 210, illustrated volume 2, p. 490.

Queen Marie (1767–1852) was married to King Frederik VI of Denmark. She was the daughter of Landgrave Carl and Landgravine Louise of Hesse-Kassel. The Landgravine was born a Danish princess as the daughter of King Frederik V of Denmark. Queen Marie was the sister of Duchess Louise of Glücksburg, née Princess of Hesse-Kassel (1789–1869). In 1810 she married Duke Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck, from 1825 Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. The portrait thus depicts the Landgravine's daughter and the Duchess's sister. It is assumed that the “good grandmother” refers to the Landgravine. At the time the painting was created in 1804, the Duchess was still unmarried, but King Frederik VI and Queen Marie had a daughter, Princess Caroline (1793–1881). This daughter can be related to the description of the grandmother and the dedication. If this assumption is correct, I. P. Møller gave the portrait to the Landgravine and it was subsequently inherited by Duchess Louise of Glücksburg.
