Holger Roed (b. Copenhagen 1846, d. Ringsted 1874)

Portrait of the Danish painter Jørgen Roed (1808–1888), the artist's father. Hanging on the wall behind him is the work “Parti af Frederiksborg. Karusselporten” (View from Frederiksborg. The Carousel Gate), which he painted in 1834–36. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 96.5×71 cm.

Holger Roed was the son of the Danish portrait and genre painter Jørgen Roed (the sitter), and brother to the children's book author Helena Nyblom (1843–1926). Roed grew up in a very artistic house, where his parents surrounded themselves with artists and art lovers alike. Holger Roed passed away in 1874, when he was only 27 years old, after having made an early return from his grand tour of Southern Europe. His short life means that he has only left behind a limited body of work.
