A study for the large portrait of Frederik VI at Christiansborg Castle painted for the government building at The Danish West Indies. Three painted sketches for the same composition is at Rosenborg Castle, Det Nationalhistoriske Museum at Frederiksborg and Koldinghus (see Wilhelm Bendz 1804–1832. Et ungt kunstnerliv, Den Hirschsprungske Samling 1996, p. 132ff)

Provenance: Presumably the artist's fiancé Marie Raffenberg; presumably her husband B.C. Grønberg; his sale, 19. may 1864, no. 55 or 56 (”Frederik den Sjette i Kroningsdragt”). No. 55 was purchased by F.C. Krohn (1806–1883); his sale, 12. november 1883, no. 58 (”Frederik den Sjette i Kroningsdragt. Blyant. 1830”); purchased here by Kruse. No. 56 purchased by J.V. Mounted on paper. Slightly brown/pale. Foxing. Examined in the frame.
