2432/283

An original b/w press photograph of the German delegation's unconditional surrender to Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery (1887–1976) at Lüneburg Heath south of Hamburg on May 4, 1945, at 18:30 British Double Summer Time. Back with agency stamp ('United Press International Photo') and stamped publication date (November 17, 1947). Visible size 19.5×25 cm. Frame size 27×33 cm.

The German delegation consisted of Admiral Hans-Georg von Friedeburg (1895–1945) (seated as #2 from the left), General Eberhard Kinzel (1897–1945) (seated as #1 from the left), Admiral Gerhard Wagner (1898–1987), Major General Fritz Poleck (1905–1989) and Major Hans Jochen Friedel (1896–1945). Less than two months after the surrender three of these men were dead - Friedeburg and Kinzel due to suicide, Friedel in a car accident.

The following addition was made July 2, 2024: On November 17, 1947, Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery celebrated his 70th birthday and having the date stamps on the back in mind, it is reasonable to assume that this photograph was used in a newspaper article on this occasion.
