Pieter Cornelisz van Slingeland, after, 19th century

Young girl with a bird's cage at a window. Unsigned. Oil on panel. 24×18 cm.

Similar painting by Slingeland at Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark).

The subject with women and birds was very popular in the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century, where a woman's virtue was considered as flighthy as a bird. The position of the bird in or outside the cage tells us about the woman's virtue. So the young girl here is not quite innocent!

Provenance: Margrethe Jacobsen' estate auction, Bruun Rasmussen auction 141, 1962 no. 431.
