Prestudy for - or a repetition of “Oprettelsen af Kjøbenhavns Brandforsikring 1731”. (The establishment of Kjøbenhavns Brandforsikring). On the reverse a sketch of the top half of the Minotaur. Unsigned. Inscribed N. Abildgaard and numbered 569 on the reverse. Gouache on paper (front) and black crayon on paper (reverse). Sheet size 19.5×36.5 cm and visible size 18×34 cm.

Kjøbenhavns Brandforsikring, established in 1731 - three years after the fire of 1728, was the first ever Danish insurance company.

This work is a prestudy for - or a repetition of the original which is located at Christiansborg Palace. An oil sketch is located at the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), inventory number KMS1963c.

The drawing on the reverse is related to “Modeltegning af Minotauros” (Model drawing of Minotauros) from the 1790s, which is located in the collection of the Royal Academy of Art, and is reproduced in Charlotte Christensen, “Maleren Nicolai Abildgaard”, p. 215.

Provenance: Kunsthallen auction 434, 1993 no. 139. Former head curator at The Royal Collection of Prints and Drawings at the National Gallery of Art (SMK), art historian Erik Fischer (1920–2011).

Condition

The paper is slightly creased. Minor surface scratches and peelings. A minimal tear near lower left edge. Examined in frame.
