Birger Kaipiainen (b. Björneborg 1915, d. 1988)

“Beaded bird”. A large patinated iron bird sculpture. Metal wire decor with blue, grey and bronze glazed ceramic beads. Rectangular base signed Kaipianen. Made at Arabia, Finland ca. 1960. H. 130 cm.

Literature: “Mobilia”, no. 86, September 1962, containing a 30 page presentation of the exhibition as well as several interior photos illustrating the present as well as other bird sculptures.

Exhibited: “Finsk Form”, Lyngby, 1962.

Provenance: The exhibition “Finsk Form” (Finnish Design) was so extensive that it was held in the great hall at Lyngby Stadium. Here the audience could acquaint themselves with the latest trends within applied art and design, which fully demonstrated that Finnish design was flourishing once more and had left the shadows from World War II behind. Timo Sarpaneva was the architect of the exhibition in close collaboration with Bodil Kjær, who clearly remember Birger Kaipiainen's characteristic birds and had also done sketches of them in connection with the exhibition's layout. About the selection, Svend Erik Møller writes in Mobilia: “Arabia opened its doors to a large number of talented ceramicists. The exhibition in Lyngby showed a new cohort from this group of ceramicists working at Arabia. First and foremost, there was the temperamental Rut Bryk, who in the last couple of years has been interested in the decorated ceramic tile. There is also the mystic Birger Kaipiainen, whose large bird made of ceramic and metal materials was already a focal point in Finland's exhibition at the Triennial in 1959.” Kaipiainen's development of ceramic beads, mounted on wires, attracted a great deal of attention and was one of the artistic highlights of the fruitful collaboration with Arabia, which he initiated as early as 1937. The present sculpture was acquired in connection with the exhibition and has since then been in private ownership.
