Xie "Lalan" Jinglan (b. Guizhou 1921, d. 1995)

“La lune était bleue” (The Moon was blue). Signed and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 100×81 cm.

Exhibited: “Lalan-separatudstilling”, Galerie Moderne, Silkeborg, Denmark, 1971, cat. no. 13.. Provenance: Galerie Moderne, Silkeborg, Denmark.

“The figurative is dissolved as the composition is based solely on colour. These images must be observed for a while to sense the delicacy of the values in the colour, which are inseparable from the composition as a whole. Together they structure the movement in the painting, the variability of the light. The motif is thereby deftly replaced by the varying intensity of the light, which makes this painting as structurally sound as if there was a motif within it. On the other hand, the colour and light, which rules supreme, make this a predominantly lyrical painting.”

Eugéne Ionesco in the exhibition catalogue for “Lalan”, Galerie Moderne, Silkeborg, 1971.
