Trine Søndergaard

Nicolai Howalt

“Lindekær”, from the series “How to Hunt”. 2005–2010. Ed. 5+2AP. Unsigned. c-print. Framed. 120×150 cm.

The photographs from the “How to Hunt” series were made of multilayered, manipulated photographs focusing on the ritual of the hunt. An art historical theme known from the cave paintings to the renaissance. The series points to the paradoxical nature of the hunt: being more of a recreational practice than a means to survival.

The series won much acclaim for playing with the genre and re-instating it in a modern, specifically photographic context. For the duo, the series also marked a change from a documentary based expression towards an expression allowing the artists to play with the limits and possibilities of the photographic medium. This aspect is also visible in the couple’s later series “Dying Birds” (2007–2009) and not least in the artist’s later solo projects, like the beautiful and internationally acclaimed series “Strude” by Trine Søndergaard.
