Johannes C. Bjerg (b. Ødis 1886, d. Copenhagen 1955)
“Den Tungsindige Atlet” (The Melancholic Athlete) or “Danmark under Besættelsen” (Denmark During the Occupation), 1943. Signed Johannes C. Bjerg. Figure of dark patinated bronze on a granite base. H. incl. base 63 cm.
Literature: Kresten Bjerg's catalogue of Johannes C. Berg's sculptures, www.johannesbjerg.com, registered under 'Statuetter", year 1942.
The statuette is a study for a monumental figure, which is found in two examples, one at Nyborg Stadium and one at Genforeningspladsen in Copenhagen. The statue was made “through impressions of the time.” It symbolizes Denmark, which during the beginning of World War II sought appeasement and later rose up in protest.
In 1944, Johannes C. Bjerg was awarded Thorvaldsen’s Medal for “The Melancholic Athlete”.
