Cimon and Iphigenia. Iphigenia dozing in a park with her maids, at their feet a dog and a monkey stuffing itself with fruit. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 90×116 cm.

The present painting is painted after the original by Peter Paul Rubens c 1617 located in Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, INV. NO. Gemäldegalerie 532. In the present painting Cimon is absent from the komposition.

Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna writes of the original: “The narrative of this novella in Boccaccio’s Decamerone tells the story of Cimon who, despite his high birth, is not interested in education or manners. But when he sees the beautiful and cultured Iphigenia, he decides to earn her love by acquiring all the knowledge that is necessary for a nobleman. For the still life with fruit, and the landscape Rubens had the help, as so often, of the painters Frans Snyders and Jan Wildens”.
