Johannes S. Kjarval (b. Efri-Ey 1885, d. Reykjavik 1972)

Svínahraun Lava Field, Iceland. Signed J. S. Kjarval 1938. Oil on canvas. 113×151 cm.

Literature: “Kjarval”, Nesútgáfan Publishing, Reykjavik 2005, similar works ill. p.p. 286–310. Provenance: Private collection, Iceland. Commissioned and acquired from the artist by the present owner's grandfather, Ludvig Storr, the Consul General for Denmark in Iceland for many years. Hence by descent in the family and not previously exhibited publicly or offered for sale.

In an interview from 1939 Kjarval explains the recent development in his art:

“Previously I painted only a background, a mountain - as you know - without any foreground. Now I have started painting differently, more like other painters, with a prominent foreground, two kinds of centre and a slight background, only the blue tone of the mountain with the sky above to protect the whole. If there is room for any sky, nota bene, otherwise the painting will have to be without a sky: unprotected, that's how it is and nothing to do about it. When there is no room, even the sky itself becomes disentitled”. (Kjarval in an interview with Berlingske Aftenavis, July 19, 1939, quoted here from the above mentioned book p. 279).
