Jean René Gauguin (b. Paris 1881, d. Copenhagen 1961)

“Portrætbuste af kunstmaler Carl Holsøe”. Portrait bust of painter Carl Holsøe (1863–1935). Bronze. 1918. Signed J. R. Gauguin. Stamped DK (Dansk Kunsthandel). H. 38 cm. L. 50 cm.

Exhibited: Dansk Kunsthandel, '“Jean Gauguin Udstilling”, catalogue no. 11, 20 January-5 February 1918, no. 2, reproduced in the catalogue.

Jean René Gauguin exhibited the first version of the bust, which was made of ebony, at Charlottenborg in 1917. In 1918 he exhibited the present bust in bronze in Dansk Kunsthandel and in 1919 the National Gallery of Denmark acquired a version made of black marble (inv. no. KMS5723).

Vejen Kunstmuseum has a bronze statuette by Gauguin depicting Holsøe in full figure (inv. no. 012893), which was exhibited at the same exhibition in Dansk Kunsthandel in 1918, as the present bust as no. 1.

“Dansk Kunsthandel” at Nikolaj Plads in Copenhagen was an exclusive art trade with its own bronze foundry. It was founded by engineer and art collector Johannes Rump (1861–1932). Dansk Kunsthandel only existed for three years from 1917 to 1919 but it had a great impact on the modern Danish art.
