Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain at 5,895 meters, was first climbed on October 6, 1889, by the young Tanzanian Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo (1871–1996), the German geologist Hans Meyer (1858–1929), and Austrian teacher and mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller (1849–1900).
This is an original black-and-white silver gelatin press photograph from c. 1940, which shows fine surface scratches and signs of normal handling. Back with discolouration.
