This photograph, dated October 18, 1947, was taken only two months after India's independence from England (August 15, 1947), an event followed by mass slaugther of both Muslims and Hindus. Gandhi's great dream - a united nation with room for all denominations, the very theme of his speech - was definitively crushed during these troubled months and the end result was two independent states, India and Pakistan. Three months after the New Delhi oration Gandhi fell for an assassin's bullets (January 30, 1948).
