Unknown photographer: An original b/w press photograph of the American high jumper Edward Burke (1915-?), who is here seen clearing the bar at 6 feet 6 7/16 inches and thereby winning the US semi-final Olympic trials prior to the Berlin Games in the summer of 1936. Marquette University, Milwaukee. Back with Acme Newspictures stamp and a describing news telegram dated June 27, 1936. Photo size 15×20.5 cm. Frame size 24×32 cm.

Edward Burke set the indoor world high jump record on February 27, 1937 with a height of 6 feet, 9.25 inches (206 cm). The event took place in Madison Square Garden, New York.

The high jump world record (indoor) is today 8 feet, 0.4 inches (243 cm) (Javier Sotomayor of Cuba)

Condition

This is an original b/w press photograph from 1936, which shows a discoloured area on the front (due to a glued-on telegram on the backside). Back slightly discoloured due to ageing/storage conditions. Furthermore normal signs of handling.
