“Havens stille Venner” (The silent friends of the garden). C. 1844. Signed with monogram. Drawing ink and watercolour on paper. Visible size 25×47.5 cm.

Literature: Marianne Saabye and Iver Kjær, “Rejse til bakketroldens indre” in “Tegninger og Huletanker. Johan Thomas Lundbye 1818–1848”, 1998, pp. 50–52. An illustration of the drawing can be seen on p. 51.

During 1844, Lundbye often worked with depictions of trolls and elves. He was one of the first artists to introduce the elf as a figure in Danish art. He was very interested in old Danish folklore and used many of the different supernatural beings from the old stories in his drawings. He used both the hill troll, the dwarf and the elf as either his alter ego or as a dear companion and/or helper in many of his drawings.
