Elisabeth Karlinsky (b. Kasten, Nederøstrig 1904, d. 1994)
Early spring sunshine at Haukli, Norway. Signed and dated EK, Haukli 1950. Oil on canvas. 59×92 cm.
Elisabeth Karlinsky is educated at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna 1921–26 with Prof. Cizek. After her education, she travels to New York and then Paris, but from 1931 settles in Denmark, where she marries the writer and painter Hans Scherfig. The couple travels, among other places, to Norway, where this motif turns into a quiet spring morning on the mountain.
In her art, she cultivates an intimate naturalism that moves from female figures to landscapes and garden images in a quiet palette - however there is always a lively rhythmic composition present with an understanding of the special features of the motif, a joy at the growth of nature and the wonder of the everyday and the near.
