Titanic

Collection of 29 postcards, all with motifs related to Titanic. 20th century. The collection includes two photo postcards depicting the Oceanic's salvage of Titanic's last lifeboat containing 3 bodies [first class passenger Thomas Beattie and 2 unidentified crewmen], May 13, 1912. Moreover one postcard handwritten by a Danish eyewitness to the arrival of the 700 survivors from Titanic on the boat Carpathia on the 19th of April 1912. Some of the postcards annotated on verso, some stamped. [  ]

The postcard is written by a person “A” who is deeply affected by the fatal event and by the huge crowd of people that awaits the arrival of their loved ones - “New York is in sorrow”, he notes. The text reads:

“General Delivery. New York City April 19, 1912. 50–100.000 Mennesker og mindst 5000 Automobiler overværede i Nat Ankomsten af de 700 Redede fra Titanic - Det var en Ynkeligt Syn som jeg sent skal glemme. New York er i Sorg som jeg har aldrig set før. Kærlig hilsen til Jer Alle fra A.” (General Delivery. New York City April 19, 1912. Last night, 50–100,000 people and at least 5000 automobiles witnessed the arrival of the 700 saved souls from Titanic - It was a pitiful sight which will stay in my mind. New York is grieving in a way I have never experienced before. Love to you all from A.).
