Original b/w press photograph of a nuclear test at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean in June 1946. Back with descriptive text dated July 1, 1946. Oak wood frame and double glazing. Visible size 20×24 cm. Frame size 30×35 cm.
The Bikini Atoll tests, conducted by the US in the Western Pacific from 1946–1958, involved the detonation of 24 nuclear bombs. These tests displaced the native population and caused lasting environmental contamination. The American vessels that can be seen at the edge of the mushroom cloud illustrate the size and scope of such a very early nuclear explosion.
This is an original b/w silver gelatin press photograph from 1946, which shows normal handling signs. No further remarks.
