A present from Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna of Russia

A silver vase, in Russian taste and of trumpet-shaped form, decorated with translucent white and green enamel on guilloched ground, mounted with garlands and scrolling leaf vines cagework. Indistinct maker's mark, 900 standard. Germany, early 20th century. Weight 132 g. H. 12.2 cm. Upper diam. 4.5 cm.

Provenance: Present from Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna of Russia to her life-cossack, Timofei Xenofonovich Yaschik (1878–1946). He was born in the Caucasus, became a cossack, and in 1914 appointed life-cossack for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. In 1915 he was appointed life-cossack for the mother, Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna of Russia, a service he remained true to the rest of her life. Yaschik followed Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna during the escape in 1917 to the Crimea, and afterwards in exile from 1919, first in England and soon after in Denmark. His first Russian wife was shot in Russia in 1921, and in 1925 he married the Dane Agnes Aabrink, in the Russian church in Copenhagen. She became a Russian Orthodox and was baptized Nina. After the death of Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna in 1928, the couple bought a house and a grocery store in Valby, outside Copenhagen. Yaschik died in 1946 and was buried at Assistens Cemetery, the Russian section. His memoirs were published in Danish in 1968 and in English in 2004. Nina and Yaschik had no children, but were close with Nina's sister's children. The vase has been in the possesion of Nina Yaschik's sister's descendants until today.
