A gold ring set with a Roman carnelian intaglio engraved with Nike carrying a laurel wreath and palm branch. Ring owned by the Danish sculptor Herman Wilhelm Bissen, 1798–1868. Visible length of intaglio 13 mm.

Provenance: Descendants of Rudolf Bissen 1846–1911. Passed down from Herman Wilhelm Bissen 1798–1868 to Rudolf Bissen. Gift from Bertel Thorvaldsen, 1770–1844, to Herman Wilhelm Bissen.

Bertel Thorvaldsen often set intaglios from his collection in gold and gave them as Christmas and farewell gifts to friends a.o. C.W. Eckersberg, J.M. Thiele and Carsten Hauch.
