Jens Juel (b. Balslev, Funen 1745, d. Copenhagen 1802)

"Udsigt over Genfersøen fra Bonnets terrasse, i mellemgrunden Geneve, i baggrunden Mont Blanc. View of Lake Geneva seen from Bonnet's terrace, in the middle distance Geneva, in the background Mont Blanc. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 40×49 cm.

A repetition by the painter's own hand of no. 200 in Ellen Poulsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Jens Juel, this one dated c. 1779 and in the National Gallery of Denmark (Inv. No. 6220).

Charles Bonnet (1720–1793) was a Swiss naturalist and philosopher and Jens Juel's good friend during his stay in Switzerland. Bonnet brought together a very small group of Danish artists in his country house - in addition to Juel, among others engraver Clemens, enamel painter Hans Heinrich Plötz and painter Simon Malcho.

Charles Bonnet commissioned this portrait by Jens Juel (seen here on the left), when he had been appointed honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts at Charlottenborg, where the portrait can be seen today.
